The short version
Proof of onward travel is evidence that you intend to leave a country before your permitted stay ends — normally a flight, bus, train or ferry booking out of it. Airlines ask for it at check-in and immigration officers ask for it on arrival, and either can refuse you without it.
They ask because the airline carries the cost. Under the carrier-liability rules airlines check through IATA’s Timatic system, an airline that flies a passenger who is then refused entry pays to fly them back, and often a fine on top. That is why the question comes at the check-in desk rather than the gate, and why “I’ll book something later” is not accepted.
What counts is verifiability. A booking is checked by looking up its record locator — the six-character PNR — in the airline’s own system. A screenshot, a search-result page, or a PDF with no working reference proves nothing, because there is nothing for the agent to look up.
Where to start
- You are not sure what is being asked for
- Start with what an onward ticket is. It covers the terminology, who asks, and what a booking has to contain to be accepted.
- You have been told a “dummy ticket” will do
- Read onward ticket vs dummy ticket. The three terms are used interchangeably and mean different things, and one of them is not verifiable.
- You want to know if anyone really checks
- See whether onward tickets are checked — which is a question about airlines and immigration separately, because they check at different moments and for different reasons.
- You need the rule for a specific country
- Go to requirements by country and visa type. Rules differ by nationality and by the visa you are travelling on, not just by destination.
- You already know what you need and want to get one
- Six methods compared sets out the options — including buying a refundable fare and holding a reservation — with the trade-offs of each.
