How does an onward ticket work?
An onward ticket is a real airline reservation held under a genuine PNR for a limited period. Immigration and airline staff can look it up in the carrier system, so it verifies as real without you paying full fare. You receive it by email, usually within minutes.
The mechanism
- You give a departure, a destination and a date.
- A reservation is created in the airline’s own system and a PNR is returned.
- You receive a PDF itinerary carrying that PNR.
- Anyone who needs to check types the PNR into the airline system and sees a live booking.
Why a reservation is enough
The check at a counter is not "has this person paid?" — it is "does this booking exist?". A held reservation answers that question truthfully. It is the same mechanism a travel agent uses when holding seats for a client who has not yet paid.
What it is not
It is not a boarding pass and it will not fly you anywhere. It is a document that proves intent to depart. If you actually need to take the flight, buy the flight.
When it expires
Reservations are held for a defined window and then released. That is normal airline behaviour, not a limitation of the service — but it does mean timing matters. Order close to the date you will be asked for it rather than months ahead.
