Valid ICVP Ready (15 Days Post-Shot) — Must Clear Port Health Before Immigration

Arriving from or transiting >12h in an endemic zone triggers mandatory Yellow Card verification at Port Health Control (e.g., Bangkok BKK Health Control / Singapore ICA). At 15 days post-vaccination, your certificate satisfies the 10-day WHO activation window and holds lifetime validity.

Recommended Action Plan & Compliance Steps

  • 1Keep the original physical paper WHO International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) in your carry-on — photos or PDFs on a phone are routinely rejected.
  • 2Verify that the batch number, clinician signature, official clinic stamp, and your passport number match your current passport.
  • 3Upon deplaning (especially at Bangkok BKK, Singapore SIN, Delhi DEL, or Johannesburg JNB), go directly to the Port Health Control desk before joining the main passport control line.

How Airlines & Port Health Officers Enforce the WHO Yellow Card

Yellow Fever border enforcement isn’t designed to protect you—it’s designed to prevent travelers arriving from South America or Sub-Saharan Africa from introducing the virus into Aedes mosquito populations in Asia and other regions.

The Strict 10-Day Post-Vaccination Rule & Lifetime Validity

  • • A primary Yellow Fever vaccination (Stamaril or YF-VAX) requires 10 full calendar days to build protective immunity and become legally valid for border entry.
  • • Since the July 2016 WHO International Health Regulations amendment, a single valid dose provides lifetime legal validity—countries can no longer reject a card that is more than 10 years old.
  • • If you arrive on Day 8 or Day 9 after your shot, Port Health officers in Thailand, India, Singapore, or South Africa can place you under observation or quarantine until Day 10.

The Hidden 12-Hour Airport Transit Trap

  • • Even if you never leave the international transit lounge, a layover exceeding 12 hours in an endemic hub (such as Addis Ababa ADD, Nairobi NBO, São Paulo GRU, or Bogotá BOG) triggers mandatory ICVP checks at your final destination.
  • • India’s Airport Health Organization (APHO) is even stricter: any transit through an endemic airport—even a 2-hour plane change—can trigger a Yellow Card demand upon landing in Delhi or Mumbai.
  • • Always carry your physical yellow paper booklet when flying Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, LATAM, or Avianca into Asia, Australia, or Southern Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions — Yellow Fever Border Checker

Can I show a photo or digital scan of my Yellow Fever card at immigration?

No. Under WHO International Health Regulations (Annex 6), only the original physical yellow paper booklet bearing the wet-ink signature of the clinician and the official stamp of an approved vaccination center is legally valid.

What if I got a new passport since my Yellow Fever card was issued?

Your ICVP remains valid for life even if the passport number written on it belongs to an expired passport. Simply carry a photo of your old passport bio page or the old passport itself so the name and date of birth can be cross-verified.

Do I need a Yellow Fever shot if I only visited Machu Picchu or Buenos Aires?

While Buenos Aires is non-endemic, Peru and Brazil are classified as endemic countries on almost all Asian and African Port Health lists. Even if you stayed in high-altitude Cusco where mosquitoes do not live, Thailand and Singapore require an ICVP simply because your passport shows departure from Peru.

How does Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) process travelers arriving from Brazil or Kenya?

Before you join the main Immigration queue at BKK, you must stop at the clearly marked "Health Control" counter along the arrival concourse, fill out the T.8 health declaration form, and get your boarding pass stamped by the Port Health officer.
